So many layers, so little suitcase space! Packing to stay warm and packing light don’t have to be mutually exclusive. As someone who always tries to avoid checking bags when I fly, I’ve nearly mastered the art of fitting a strategic wardrobe into a carry-on. Once upon a time I even packed for blizzard conditions in a carry-on (more on that wintry trip to Boston here). Here’s how I did it:

Dresses. Pack 1 or 2 dresses that can be layered with leggings. For extra warmth and a more wintry look, make it a sweater dress.
Tops. Aside from a few basic t-shirts and camis for layering, you’ll want to pack 3-4 long-sleeve shirts and sweaters. My standard mix is a basic black long-sleeve, a plaid flannel, one or two thicker sweaters/long-sleeve shirts, and a cardigan.
Coats. My favorite winter piece for travel in addition to a heavy winter coat is a sweater poncho or wrap – it’s great for flight days because it doubles as a blanket for on the plane! I wear both to the airport and end up carrying my coat onto the plane.
Pants. One pair of jeans and one or two pairs of leggings usually do the trick. If you’re expecting extremely cold temps, pack your loose-fitting pair of jeans to layer leggings under.
Shoes. Pack one pair of weather-proof boots, and one pair of comfortable, warm boots of your preference.
Socks. When it comes to socks, you can’t go wrong with overpacking. My feet get cold easily when I’m out walking around, so I love to double up on socks and pack my best thick cozy socks. If snow is in the mix your feet will thank you!
The winter basics. Don’t forget a big cozy scarf, hat, and warm gloves.
Don’t let cold temps scare you away from booking that dream winter vacation!
